How we work

The Land Facility provides FCDO Posts and partner governments with specialist land governance expertise, evidence and strategic support to address the underlying drivers of conflict, climate vulnerability and displacement.

Through tailored analysis, technical assistance, policy engagement and partnership-building, LF helps translate resilience, recovery and development objectives into practical, locally grounded action, strengthening institutions, reducing risks and supporting more sustainable and inclusive development pathways. In practice, this includes:

  • Political economy, conflict and land governance analysis to identify drivers of conflict, displacement and climate vulnerability, and inform FCDO programming and policy engagement.
  • Strategic technical advice and evidence to integrate land governance into conflict prevention, humanitarian response, recovery, climate resilience and investment programmes.
  • Dispute resolution, dialogue and consensus-building to address land-related grievances, strengthen social cohesion and support peacebuilding and stabilisation.
  • Land rights, tenure security and housing, land and property (HLP) support to protect vulnerable groups, support displacement and restitution challenges, and strengthen resilience and recovery pathways.
  • Institutional, policy and legal reform support to strengthen land governance systems, improve accountability and build government capacity for long-term resilience and sustainable development.
  • Convening partnerships and specialist expertise to connect Posts with UK and international technical experts, government partners, multilateral organisations, civil society and development partners to deliver systemic change and scale impact.

Key features of the LF approach

  • Technical expertise: We bring deep technical capabilities at the local, regional and global levels. Our practical experience spans analysis, evidence use, technical assistance, facilitated exchange and engagement and influencing strategies.
  • Partnerships: We identify sensitive and strategic entry points in partnership with country governments and others to address land governance constraints and achieve shared objectives.
  • PEA informed: Our approach to design and delivery is informed by ongoing political economy analysis.
  • Scalable designs: We offer a range of flexible fit-for-purpose support that can range from lite to deep activities.
  • Cross-sectoral: We work across both land and land-adjacent sectors to provide flexible, context specific support across a range of linked technical areas.
  • Demand responsive: Existing priorities, emerging opportunities and shared understandings underpin programming.
